Johns Island

Johns Island located due west of the Charleston peninsula is an area of the Lowcounty that has a little bit of everything to make this one of the most desirable places to buy a property and live in the Charleston area.

The island has always and will continue to provided the Lowcountry with the best local fruits & vegetables. Johns Island SC is the largest tomato producer in the country. Many varieties of tomatoes are grown here as well as blueberries, pumpkins, cucumbers, strawberries, melons, okra, collard greens and just about anything that grows in the Charleston climate. Vegetable stands and flower stands are plentiful and offer what it takes to make dinner time healthy and great.

One of the most delightful sights on the Island (no beach) is the famous Angle Oak tree.  The Angel Oak is considered to be the largest living oak tree east of the Mississippi River.  Its branches provide more than 17000 square feet of shade . The tree is more than 65 feet tall with a circumference of 25.5 feet. At more than 1400 years old, the Angel Oak has provided much pleasure and is truly a Charleston treasure.

For the buyer Johns Island offers two completely different settings from which to choose. There are a few subdivisions that popped up during the mid-late 1980’s, but most of the subdivisions have developed just recently. Both bridges that access the island have been replaced, making the commute into town much easier and the island of great interest to developers. However, with so much of the land still being actively worked by farmers, one can find a gracious home on a large piece of property with nice neighbors who aren’t so close by. If you are looking for a country lifestyle in close proximity to the city, Johns Island may be a good choice for you.
